In my opinion of course. As the title suggests, these are the ten best Megadrive shooters money can buy (also, these are the best shooters I can afford, as some rarer ones are super expensive - but they wouldn’t make the list anyway! VV, Gleylancer, Sol Deace I’m looking at you and you know you suck!) I’m not going to put these games in an order because that would be crass and come over all definitive, which this list is not – how can it be? My preference changes like the seasons, slowly and two times a year (global warming innit... oohhhh! topical!) I will endeavour however, try to make a solid case for including each one in my list if I feel like it. Look at that! I’m all me me me. Oh, and you’ll find no platform shooters here as I’m keeping it trad-shooter focused, platformers would be a different list mate. My history with Gradius.

My first Blog post, lets talk about Gradius... A 'Shmup'. A 'shooter'. A 'horizontal shooter'. Does this sum up Gradius? No, no it doesn’t. Does it broadly outline the genre that Gradius (or Nemesis, depending on your taste and/or physical location on this planet we call Earth) lives within, sure – if you’re the sort of person that likes their entertainment neatly defined and ordered by general theme, you’re probably happy to hear it slots in the genre rather nicely. I never liked the term 'Shmup' however, back in the day it was always ‘shooter’, or if you were talking to your Nana, a 'Tele-game' (her words). As it clearly states, this is Gradius  That laser . LET’S TALK ABOUT THE BOULEVARD.

  It’s the 1980’s, unemployment, synth wave, choose your own adventure books, Ninjas and arcade machines are in fashion. Kids in the 80’s loved the 80’s. Old people in their 80‘s living in the 80’s, hated kids in the 80’s, but they liked Margaret Thatcher, who hated 80’s kids so much she stole their milk. She also, for reasons best known to herself, hated the Welsh. Even with the terrifying AIDS adverts on TV and billboards reminding you of your immediate and irreversible plummet into death (should you even think about looking at another human you may find attractive) the 80’s are fondly remembered as carefree days with red hot summers, long snowy winters and currency that came in half-pences. You could buy hard candy sticks with dyed red tips that looked like a lit cigarette, combine some of those with a flat-top and mullet combo, stone washed double denim jeans and jacket, and you had a serious 80’s look that scared old ladies and made every 10 year old feel like the bees-knees.
